Do you want to display those heirlooms that you have handed down? Do you have a great collection of memorabilia but don't really know how to best show it off. A curio cabinet is the traditional approach to doing so. And today there are more choices than ever in curio display cabinets.

Where did Curio Cabinets Come From?

Thesedid not used to be as common as they are today. They came into popularity in the 1700's. These cabinets were owned by the wealthy who displayed the treasures and other goods in them. Of course, hundreds of years ago, the only people who had any sort of collection to display were the royalty of the time. They have always found favor as a way to keep dust off valuables, and to protect them from pests of all sorts, including young children.

Today, a curio cabinet is typically a largely glass cabinet made from metal or wood. They are used to display a variety of things, not only bric a brac or family heirlooms, but it's also common to see one used to display collectibles like baseball cards or a paperweight collection. Almost any sort of collectible is fair game. However, most of the time they are used to display larger items that may be standing, as opposed to very small items that you might find in a jewelry display.

Not only are they used to display non traditional items, but the actual construction has evolved over the years. Not restricted to traditional hardwoods, it's common to see either metal surfaced units used, or simple white or black laminate finishes for use in more modern decor.

Locating a curio cabinet in your house has more options these days as well. Not restricted to a large console design, or even a traditional upright, you will find options including corner designs, or even wall mounted cabinets for use in very tight quarters.
